A blockout is a preliminary sketch or rough layout establishing basic shapes and composition before details are added.
Artists and designers use blockouts to plan proportions and placement: Start with a blockout before refining the figure.
In theater and film, blocking out means planning where actors move on stage or set.
The term also applies to material that blocks light from passing through, as in window treatments or printing screens.
