benzodiazepine
Calming prescription drug
Benzodiazepines are a class of psychoactive drugs that enhance the effect of a neurotransmitter in the brain, producing sedative, anti-anxiety, and muscle-relaxant effects.
Common examples include Valium, Xanax, and Ativan.
Doctors prescribe them for anxiety, insomnia, and seizures, but they carry risks of dependence: She was on benzos for years before tapering off.
Often shortened to benzo.
