agonist

Muscle that contracts

An agonist is something that acts or initiates action.

In pharmacology, an agonist is a substance that binds to a receptor and triggers a biological response—the opposite of an antagonist, which blocks such responses: Morphine is an opioid receptor agonist.

In anatomy, an agonist muscle is the primary mover in a joint action, contracting while its antagonist relaxes.
