baud

Symbols per second

Baud is a unit measuring data transmission speed—specifically, the number of signal changes per second in a communication channel.

Named after telegraph pioneer Émile Baudot, baud was once synonymous with bits per second, though modern systems often encode multiple bits per signal change.

The old modem connected at 2400 baud.

The term survives mainly in discussions of legacy hardware.
