half-duplex

Talk, then listen

Half-duplex describes a communication channel that transmits in both directions but only one direction at a time.

Walkie-talkies are half-duplex—one person talks while the other listens, then they switch.

Contrast with full-duplex, where both parties can transmit simultaneously, as in a telephone conversation.
