USS Maine
"Remember" this vessel
The USS Maine was an American battleship whose mysterious explosion in Havana Harbor in 1898 killed 266 sailors and precipitated the Spanish-American War.
Remember the Maine! became a rallying cry for American intervention in Cuba.
The cause of the explosion remains debated—likely a coal bunker fire rather than Spanish sabotage.
