Potemkin

Deceptively impressive surface

Potemkin describes something designed to create a false impression of prosperity, success, or achievement—a facade meant to deceive observers.

The term comes from Grigory Potemkin, a Russian minister who allegedly built fake villages to impress Empress Catherine II during her tour of Crimea.

A Potemkin village is a sham setup; the term extends to any elaborate deception: The company's glossy annual report was pure Potemkin.
