finger bowl
Tabletop washing vessel
A finger bowl is a small bowl of water, sometimes with a lemon slice or flower petal, placed at each setting during formal meals for rinsing the fingers between courses.
The practice is now rare outside of very formal dining or when eating foods meant to be handled: The lobster came with drawn butter and a finger bowl.
