baseband

Original frequency range

Baseband refers to a signal transmitted at its original frequency range, without being shifted to a higher carrier frequency.

In telecommunications, baseband transmission sends data directly over a medium—as in Ethernet cables—rather than modulating it onto radio waves.

The term also appears in mobile devices: a baseband processor handles cellular communication separately from the main processor.

The phone's baseband firmware needed updating.
