posse

Deputized search party

A posse is a group assembled for a common purpose, originally a body of citizens summoned by a sheriff to help capture a criminal or keep order.

The Old West imagery persists: The sheriff rounded up a posse to track the outlaws.

In casual use, posse means any group of friends or associates: He showed up with his whole posse.
