scrim

Translucent theater fabric

A scrim is a loosely woven fabric used in theater—opaque when lit from the front, transparent when lit from behind, creating dramatic reveals or ghostly effects.

The word extends to any thin, translucent material: a scrim of clouds filtered the sunlight.

In video production, scrims diffuse or reduce light intensity.

To scrim is to cover with such material.
