trencher
Medieval serving board
A trencher is a flat piece of wood or metal used as a plate, especially in medieval times when thick slices of stale bread served the same purpose.
The word survives mainly in trencherman—someone who eats heartily at table.
A trencher can also be a tool for digging trenches, though this sense is rare.
