semi-truck

Long-haul hauler

A semi-truck is a large commercial vehicle consisting of a cab unit (the tractor) that pulls a detachable trailer.

The name comes from the trailer being a "semi-trailer"—it has wheels only at the rear and relies on the tractor for front support.

Semi-trucks dominate long-haul freight transport in North America.

A jackknifed semi-truck blocked three lanes of traffic.

The term is primarily American; British English favors articulated lorry.
