steam shovel

Old excavation equipment

A steam shovel is a large excavating machine powered by a steam engine, with a crane-mounted bucket for digging earth and rock.

Steam shovels were essential to major construction projects of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, including the Panama Canal.

They have been replaced by diesel and hydraulic excavators, but the term persists nostalgically: Mike Mulligan and His Steam Shovel.
