backhoes

Trench-digging equipment

Backhoes are excavating machines with a digging bucket on a hinged arm, used primarily for trenching and earthmoving.

The bucket faces the operator and digs by pulling toward the machine—hence "back." A backhoe is often mounted on the rear of a tractor with a loader bucket in front: The city brought in backhoes to repair the water main.
