preserves

Jarred sweet spread

Preserves are fruit cooked with sugar to prevent spoilage, typically containing larger pieces of fruit than jam or jelly: strawberry preserves, a jar of homemade preserves.

The word also names protected areas where wildlife or natural resources are maintained: a nature preserve, a hunting preserve.

As a verb, to preserve is to maintain something in its original state or protect it from decay: preserve the Constitution, preserve one's dignity, preserve food for winter.
