caudillo
Hispanic military ruler
A caudillo is a military or political strongman, especially in Latin American contexts.
The term originally referred to 19th-century regional warlords who rose to power after Spanish colonial rule collapsed, ruling through personal charisma, military force, and patronage networks rather than democratic legitimacy.
It now applies more broadly to authoritarian leaders: The general styled himself a caudillo, promising order through iron rule.
