fireproofing

Making things nonflammable

Fireproofing is the process of making something resistant to fire, or the materials used to do so.

Buildings receive fireproofing through coatings, sprays, or barriers that slow flame spread and heat transfer: The contractor applied fireproofing to the steel beams.

The term covers both the act and the substance: The fireproofing was damaged during renovation.
