accelerants

Speed up combustion

Accelerants are substances that speed up a process.

The word appears most often in fire investigation, where an accelerant is a flammable material—gasoline, lighter fluid—used to start or spread a fire: Investigators found traces of accelerant at the scene.

In other contexts, accelerants hasten chemical reactions or biological processes: growth accelerants in animal feed.
