archons

Ancient Greek officials

Archons were the chief magistrates of ancient Athens, nine officials who held executive and judicial power.

The term extended to rulers or high officials generally.

In Gnostic theology, archons are malevolent supernatural beings who rule the material world and keep human souls trapped in physical existence: The Gnostics believed archons created the prison of matter.

The word appears in fantasy literature and conspiracy theories drawing on this cosmic-jailer concept.
