hypostasis

Essence beneath appearance

Hypostasis has two main domains.

In philosophy and theology, it refers to an underlying substance or essential nature—particularly the three distinct persons (Father, Son, Holy Spirit) of the Christian Trinity, each a separate hypostasis sharing one divine essence.

In medicine, hypostasis is the settling of blood or fluid in lower body parts due to gravity, as occurs after death: postmortem hypostasis revealed the body had been moved.

Both senses share the idea of something underlying or settling beneath.
