pneuma

Greek life force

Pneuma is an ancient Greek term meaning breath, spirit, or soul—the vital force animating living things.

In philosophy and theology, pneuma represents the life-giving principle that distinguishes the living from the dead.

Early Christian texts use it for the Holy Spirit.

The word survives in English derivatives: pneumatic (air-powered), pneumonia (lung disease).
