apertures

Gaps letting through

Apertures are openings, gaps, or holes, especially ones that allow light or other matter to pass through.

The term appears most often in technical contexts: in photography and optics, the aperture is the opening in a lens that controls how much light reaches the film or sensor.

A wider aperture lets in more light and creates a shallower depth of field; a narrower one does the opposite.

She adjusted the aperture to compensate for the bright sunlight.
