gratings
Irritating scraping noises
Gratings are frameworks of parallel or crossed bars, typically covering openings like windows, drains, or vents.
The word also names the harsh, irritating quality of sounds or experiences: the gratings of metal on metal.
In physics, a diffraction grating is a surface with fine parallel lines that separates light into its spectrum.
