lens aperture

Camera's adjustable pupil

Lens aperture is the opening in a camera lens that controls how much light reaches the film or sensor.

A wider aperture lets in more light and creates a shallow depth of field, blurring the background; a narrower aperture admits less light but keeps more of the scene in focus.

Aperture is measured in f-stops: shooting at f/2.8 gives you that creamy bokeh.
