anvil drop
Heavy metal fall
An anvil drop is a comedic device, especially in cartoons, where a heavy anvil falls from above onto an unsuspecting character.
The gag became a staple of Looney Tunes and similar animation, where characters survive absurdly destructive impacts.
By extension, any sudden crushing blow or unexpected disaster: The news hit like an anvil drop.
