malleus

Auditory chain link

Malleus is the outermost of the three tiny bones in the middle ear that transmit sound vibrations from the eardrum to the inner ear.

Its name comes from the Latin word for hammer, which describes its shape—a long handle attached to a rounded head that connects to the eardrum.

The malleus works in concert with the incus and stapes to amplify sound waves before they reach the cochlea.
