aldermen

Municipal governing officials

Aldermen is the plural of alderman, a member of a municipal legislative body.

The term dates to medieval England, where aldermen were senior officials.

In modern American cities that retain the title, aldermen serve on city councils representing specific wards or districts: The aldermen voted to approve the zoning change.

Some cities have replaced the term with council member.
