merchant class
Shopkeepers and traders
The merchant class is the social stratum comprising traders, shopkeepers, and business owners—people who make their living through commerce rather than land ownership, manual labor, or aristocratic privilege.
Historically positioned between nobility and peasantry, the merchant class gained influence as trade expanded, eventually forming the core of what became the middle class or bourgeoisie.
The rising merchant class challenged the old feudal order.
