air raid

Attack from above

An air raid is an attack by military aircraft dropping bombs on a target, especially a city or civilian area.

The term evokes World War II, when cities endured sustained bombing campaigns and residents sought shelter during air raid sirens.

The air raid destroyed several city blocks.

By extension, any sudden aerial assault: drone strikes have replaced traditional air raids.
