B-17

Heavy wartime bomber

The B-17 is a heavy bomber aircraft used by the United States during World War II, officially named the Flying Fortress.

Its rugged construction and defensive armament made it central to American strategic bombing campaigns over Europe: My grandfather flew thirty missions in a B-17.

The designation follows U.S. military convention where B indicates bomber.
