high fructose corn syrup
Processed corn sweetener
High fructose corn syrup is a sweetener made from corn starch, with some of its glucose converted to fructose.
It became ubiquitous in American processed foods and soft drinks starting in the 1970s because it was cheaper than cane sugar.
Critics blame it for rising obesity rates, though nutritionally it resembles table sugar: The ingredient list showed high fructose corn syrup near the top.
