Offsets are things that counterbalance or compensate for something else.
A carbon offset supposedly neutralizes emissions by funding equivalent reductions elsewhere: The airline offers carbon offsets for flights.
In printing and design, an offset is a transfer or displacement from one surface to another.
To offset something is to counteract it: Higher sales offset the increased costs.
An offset can also be a side shoot from a plant, or a ledge projecting from a wall.
