adz

Perpendicular cutting edge

An adz is a woodworking tool with a curved blade set at right angles to the handle, used for shaping or smoothing large pieces of wood.

Unlike an axe, which cuts with the grain, an adz cuts across or into the surface: He hollowed the log with an adz.

Also spelled adze.
