adzes
Curved woodworking blades
Adzes are woodworking tools with a curved blade set at right angles to the handle, used for shaping and smoothing wood.
Unlike an axe, which cuts with the grain, an adze cuts across or along the surface in an arcing motion.
The tool dates to ancient times and remains essential for timber framing, bowl carving, and canoe building: The shipwright shaped the hull with careful strokes of the adze.
