West

Cold War side

West as a proper noun or adjective refers to a geopolitical and cultural region—Europe and North America, contrasted with the East or the Soviet bloc during the Cold War: relations between Russia and the West.

In American contexts, the West means the western United States: pioneers heading West, the Wild West.

West also appears in place names like West Virginia, West Africa, and the West End. (Lowercase west is the compass direction.)
