Wild West
Lawless American frontier
The Wild West is the American frontier during the late 19th century, particularly the western territories before they achieved full statehood and law enforcement.
The era is associated with cowboys, outlaws, gunfights, gold rushes, and westward expansion.
Much of what people picture comes from romanticized films and novels rather than historical reality: Wild West shows, a Wild West shootout. (Lowercase wild west describes any lawless environment.)
