occident
Where sun sets
The occident is the west, particularly Western Europe and the Americas as distinguished from Asia.
The term appears mostly in formal or literary contexts: the philosophers of the occident.
Its counterpart is orient, meaning the east.
Both words now sound somewhat dated, replaced by more specific geographic terms. (Capitalized Occident emphasizes the cultural or political entity.)
