Thule

Northernmost ancient world

Thule refers to the northernmost region of the habitable world in ancient Greek and Roman geography—a land beyond Britain, variously identified with Iceland, Norway, or the Shetland Islands.

Ultima Thule (farthest Thule) came to mean any distant, mysterious place at the edge of the known world: a journey to the ultima Thule of human experience.

In modern use, Thule is a U.S.
