polar night

Sunless winter period

Polar night is the extended period of darkness that occurs in polar regions during winter, when the sun remains below the horizon for more than 24 hours.

In areas above the Arctic Circle or below the Antarctic Circle, polar night can last from days to months depending on latitude—at the poles themselves, roughly six months.

The opposite phenomenon is the midnight sun.
