Tawantinsuyu

Andean empire's self-name

Tawantinsuyu is the Quechua name for the Inca Empire, meaning "the four regions together." The name reflects how the Incas organized their realm into four administrative quarters radiating from the capital at Cusco.

At its height in the early sixteenth century, Tawantinsuyu stretched along the western coast of South America from present-day Colombia to Chile.

The term appears in historical and archaeological contexts: Tawantinsuyu was the largest empire in pre-Columbian America.
