altiplano
Elevated flat terrain
An altiplano is a high plateau, especially one found in the Andes Mountains of South America.
The term describes elevated flatlands at extreme altitudes—typically above 10,000 feet—where thin air and harsh conditions create distinctive ecosystems.
The altiplano stretches across parts of Peru, Bolivia, Chile, and Argentina. (Capitalized Altiplano refers specifically to the Andean plateau.)
