decimal system

Counting by tens

A decimal system is any system of counting or measurement based on the number ten.

The term most often refers to the place-value notation where each position represents a power of ten: ones, tens, hundreds, and so on.

Metric measurement is a decimal system—units scale by factors of ten.

Most countries use the decimal system for currency.
