passbook

Depositor's stamped record

A passbook is a small booklet issued by a bank that records deposits, withdrawals, and interest for a savings account.

Before electronic banking became standard, account holders would bring their passbook to the bank to have transactions entered by hand or machine, creating a running record of their balance.

The term persists in some countries and contexts, particularly in South Africa where passbooks were notoriously required under apartheid to control the movement of Black citizens.
