Ozymandias

Ozymandias is the Greek name for Ramesses II, the Egyptian pharaoh, but the word lives primarily through Shelley's 1818 sonnet about a ruined statue in the desert.

The poem's irony—a tyrant's boast of eternal greatness beside crumbled remains—has made Ozymandias shorthand for the futility of human ambition and the impermanence of power: All empires become Ozymandias eventually.
