colossus

Gigantic bronze figure

A colossus is something enormous in size, power, or importance.

The word originally referred to a giant statue, especially the Colossus of Rhodes—a bronze figure of the sun god that stood at the harbor entrance in ancient Greece.

Now it describes anything of overwhelming scale: a colossus of industry, an intellectual colossus.

The plural is colossi or colossuses. (Capitalized Colossus may refer to specific statues, machines, or fictional characters.)
