Old Church Slavonic

Medieval Slavic language

Old Church Slavonic is the oldest recorded Slavic language, used in religious texts from the 9th century onward.

It served as the liturgical language of Eastern Orthodox churches across Slavic lands and remains in use in some Orthodox services today.

Scholars study it as the ancestor of modern Slavic languages like Russian, Bulgarian, and Serbian.
