Slovenes
Alpine Slavic nation
Slovenes are the South Slavic people native to Slovenia, a small country in Central Europe bordering Italy, Austria, Hungary, and Croatia.
The term refers both to the ethnic group and to citizens of Slovenia more broadly.
The Slovene language is distinct from the closely related Croatian and Serbian.
The Slovenes declared independence from Yugoslavia in 1991.
