Church Slavonic
Orthodox sacred tongue
Church Slavonic is the liturgical language of Eastern Orthodox and some Eastern Catholic churches, derived from Old Church Slavonic—the earliest written Slavic language, created in the 9th century for missionary work among Slavs.
It remains in active use for worship services, much as Latin persisted in the Roman Catholic Church: The choir chanted the liturgy in Church Slavonic.
