Nurse Ratched

Nurse Ratched is a character from Ken Kesey's 1962 novel *One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest*, the tyrannical head nurse of a psychiatric ward who maintains control through manipulation, humiliation, and institutional power.

The name has become shorthand for any coldly authoritarian caregiver or administrator who exercises petty cruelty under the guise of rules and order: The office manager was a real Nurse Ratched about time cards.
